airport Systems

Scope

Airports are complex organisms. Air Traffic Controllers play a crucial part in this. Honeywell Airports Businesses provide solutions to help controlers be on top of it all. One of the parts in this system is the Pilot Display Unit control. FLO was brought in to design a new interface for this system component. Both for the Traffic Controllers and the Maintenance engineers.

Based on extensive requirements mappings by the development team and indepth briefing on the technical aspects of the system we were able to create a robust and scalable interface.

Results

The result was a scalable framework for the interface which is functionally extendable with different modules as well as flexible to accomodate different visual identities of Honeywell Airports Businesses clients.

With the supplied demo their lead customer is able to test and train their team.

Context

An airport is many things taking place at the same time in a multi-dimensional space, all stretched out over several cubic kilometres... it all needs to be monitored and controlled.

For Traffic Control it is vital communication is maintained between pilots and the ground handling crew that manage and control the stands or gates the aircrafts call at. In the event of faults or last second changes the controller needs to be able to intervene. Because of the critical nature of the process the interaction must be a simple and with as little actions as possible.

Impact

The project is an ongoing journey where new clients with various requirements will need tailor made solutions. At the same time the system becomes a part of the Honeywell Airports Solutions ‘suite’. Our design is prepared to meet this variety of demands and we continue to support its development.

This project gave us more insight into the intricacies of airport systems. The complexities that lie behind the systems that make our journeys comfortable and above all safe. Also, working with the team in Hamburg, their drive and straightforward ‘can do’ mentality was a pleasure.
